Active Pedestrian Protection
The active lightweight hinges developed by SAG Euromotive have two distinct functions. Besides functioning as a pedestrian protection component, the spring elements they employ are also used to open the bonnet in normal operation. This does away with the standard construction that uses gas springs. The active hinge is therefore a good solution from a commercial point of view as well.

An important advantage over many other systems is the easy way in which the bonnet can be repeatedly reset at no extra cost, and can even be done by the driver himself with very little effort. The entire system allows the bonnet to lift by 80 mm, and delivers a good opening time at under 60 ms.

In the event of an accident involving a pedestrian, active pedestrian protection systems should prevent the pedestrian’s head from striking the engine block. An additional crumple zone is created here, especially in more powerful cars.
